Community Outreach Program

The Joy of Music School doesn’t just work with young people at its downtown Knoxville facility. Each year, hundreds of children and teens are taught at outreach sites and events across East Tennessee.

The Joy of Music School Community Outreach Program has offered classes and activities to thousands of children throughout East Tennessee since 2001. This program serves students above and beyond Joy of Music’s in-house program, which provides tuition-free lessons and instruments for underserved children. Typical outreach sites include after-school and summer programs offered through local schools, universities, libraries, museums, churches, community and learning centers, Boys and Girls Clubs, and YWCA.

How Outreach Works

The Community Outreach Program can assist partners in three different areas: providing regularly scheduled music outreach sessions for students, musical engagement for community events, and access to musical instruments and equipment. Joy of Music School Teaching Artists travel to outreach sites/events with instruments, teaching materials, and activity plans for student groups ranging in size from 5 to 30 children. Outreach sites simply need to make space available for JoMS instructors to enable students to receive first-rate training in general music, music appreciation, note reading, rhythm recognition, ensemble playing, movement to music, genres, styles, and more.

The Community Outreach Program is Free

Outreach Program sessions and event attendance are provided at no cost and funded by Joy of Music School donors and the Tennessee Arts Commission.

Digital Learning

In addition to in-person instruction, The Joy of Music School also offers online music sessions through the Digital Learning Program (DLP). The DLP, initially developed with JoMS outreach partners during the pandemic, provides access to music lessons for students through digital learning sessions. Outreach sites can even integrate DLP learning modules using their web-based learning management system.
